Forever young: this is how researchers want to turn back the age

The common goal of the immortality visionaries is to fight aging itself and not just its consequences. But the strategies are different. Lately, these three research approaches in particular have been known and discussed:

1. Activate "Longevity Genes"

Aging means not being able to regenerate sufficiently - that is the essential insight behind the concept. The cells of the body lose the ability to repair and renew themselves with increasing lifespan. At some point they suffer cell death. The idea: We create artificially (i.e. with medication) a state that occurs after certain crisis or stressful situations - when the organism reacts to hunger, for example. The best known is Harvard geneticist David Sinclair. He has been looking for substances that stimulate the sirtuins to exert their effect on the decisive genes for a long time. Resveratrol is called one, a molecule of the grape. However the effectiveness of resveratrol is controversial, which is why Sinclair is now focusing on the molecule NAD concentrated. He was able to demonstrate a life-prolonging effect in mice.

2. Refresh the blood to rejuvenate the body

The idea is old. As early as the 19th century, a French physiologist is said to have connected the bloodstream of mice. Parabiosis is the scientific term for such a close connection between two organisms. When aging researchers took up the idea around the turn of the millennium and supplied old mice with the blood of young mice, they actually observed an effect: the Cells in muscles, brain, and liver rejuvenated, the fur of the old animals began to shine again.

Researchers Tony Wyss-Coray and Karoly Nikolich, who work in the USA, were hoping for a comparable effect. They gave young people's blood plasma to Alzheimer's patients. However, the question arises as to how “significant” the results really are: There were only 18 study participants, 9 of whom received the young blood and 9 received a placebo. In the absence of more convincing evidence of its effectiveness, there are reservations about the method.

Another team from the USA, which also treated the elderly with the blood plasma of young people, was criticized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The American Medicines Agency misses the clear evidence of a benefit for patients with neurodegenerative diseases and complains about the high costs of blood plasma transfusions.

3. The rejuvenation of the immune system

This is the approach that Greg Fahy also follows with his "thymus experiment" - by reactivating the thymus gland. For scientists at the University of Ulm around the stem cell researcher Hartmut Geiger, the thymus gland does not play the main role, it is their goal Stem cells. The aging of the immune system is mainly caused by stem cells, which have the task of renewing the immune cells - but which no longer adequately fulfill their repair tasks with increasing age.

Hartmut Geiger was able to determine this in earlier studies in mice. So the Ulm researchers tried to make the stem cells of older mice, unwilling to repair, fit for their mission again - with the help of the pharmacological substance Casino.

The result: both Stem cells then function as they did when they were young as do the cells of the immune system. At least that's what they do with these mice.
