What's the point of going to Australia
Strict measures have also been taken in Australia to limit the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) as much as possible. In many cases, visas for Australia can no longer be used at the moment, although there are a few exceptions. On this page you can read about the effects of the corona virus on your travel plans and your Australian visa. Updated on May 14, 2021.
Spread of the corona virus in Australia
As of May 14, 2021, 29,957 infections had been diagnosed in Australia and 910 people had died of Corona. To date, 2.8 million doses of vaccine have been administered in Australia, out of a total population of 25.36 million. The virus outbreak in Australia has appeared to be relatively well under control since October. In the final days of April, Perth returned to exit restrictions for three days after some new Covid-19 infections were discovered in the city, but the restrictions have been lifted and only apply to those who have been in contact with infected people.
Visa application for Australia still possible
It is currently still possible to apply for what is known as the eVisitor visa for Australia. This visa is suitable for business travel and leisure travel. It will be a long time before the visa applications that have now been submitted are processed. That will probably not be the case until the entry ban in Australia is lifted again. Since the Australia visa is valid for one year, it can be applied for now for a trip that will take place in the next 12 months.

Entry bans and exceptions
For the time being, foreigners are not allowed to enter Australia due to the Corona crisis. There are only three exceptions: First of all, for residents of Australia, i.e. for people who have Australian citizenship or who are "permanently resident" in Australia. Second, for the immediate family of Australians and permanent residents. And thirdly, for people who have been in New Zealand for at least 14 days before traveling to Australia. Travelers who do not meet these criteria and yet have an urgent and urgent reason to travel to Australia can apply for a special permit from the Australian Department of Home Affairs in order to be able to travel to Australia despite the entry ban.
However, transit in Australia is possible for travelers from countries that can stop over in Australia without a visa, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and for travelers with a transit visa. These individuals must have an onward ticket, cannot leave the airport transit area, and stay in Australia for a maximum of 72 hours. People in transit in the state of Western Australia are allowed to stay for a maximum of 24 hours.

Future of Australia Travel Restrictions
It is not yet possible to estimate when you will be able to travel to Australia on a regular basis with an e-Visa. In early May 2021 it was announced that the Australian government might keep the borders closed to foreign travelers until mid-2022. The possibility of easing travel restrictions for students and other long-term visitors is still being explored. Keep an eye on this page for information on the measures and restrictions on using the Australian Visa.

If you are (also) an Australian citizen, reside in Australia with a valid Australian residence permit, or are a direct family member of someone who does, you can still travel to Australia. An exception is also made if you work in an important industry or have badly needed skills, e.g. to provide medical services.
If you are not an Australian citizen or have a valid residence permit, you will need a special permit from the immigration authorities in addition to a valid visa. If possible, this should be requested at least two weeks but not longer than three months before the planned trip.
Additional requirements for people who are allowed to travel with a special permit
If you are allowed to travel to Australia due to an exemption, you must fill out a travel declaration ("Australia Travel Declration") at least 72 hours before departure, even travelers who only have one transit in Australia. This is used to provide contact, flight and health information After completing the declaration, a confirmation will be sent by e-mail, which must be presented on arrival (digital or printed) Travel Declaration cannot be changed after sending. If your flight details change or you have made a mistake filling out the form, you will need to delete the first declaration and submit a new one.
Since January 22, 2021, a negative PCR test result has also been required for all travelers aged 5 and over (the test must not be carried out earlier than 72 hours before departure). The test is also required for passengers who have only one transit in Australia. However, this obligation does not apply to people who have previously tested positive and have a medical certificate stating that they have not had a fever or breathing difficulties for at least 14 days, have recovered from Covid-19 and are no longer contagious.
After arriving in Australia, you must first remain in quarantine for 14 days to eliminate the likelihood of corona transmission. For this purpose, travelers must be in a designated facility, such as B. quarantined in certain hotels near the airport. Travelers who have been in New Zealand in the past 14 days can travel to Australia on a quarantine-free flight and do not need to have a negative Covid-19 test.
Return to Germany, Austria or Switzerland

If your visa is about to expire, apply for a new one before the old one expires. Certain types of visas cannot normally be applied for while you are in Australia, but due to the coronavirus outbreak, these can exceptionally be applied for with the Immigration Service. Travelers who have a visa that is about to expire, who cannot obtain another visa but cannot leave Australia due to international travel restrictions, can apply COVID-19 Pandemic event visa apply for.

Possible remuneration for the financial disadvantages of the corona measures
That cannot be assessed at the moment. It also depends on your situation, e.g. B. where you booked your trip to Australia and what costs you have already made or have to pay. Some travel insurers and operators pay for the damage caused by Corona. However, there are also insurers and tour operators who have announced that they will not be able to pay for all damages, simply because there is not enough money. Australian visas that cannot be used cannot be canceled. The Immigration Service does not take back visas and does not pay compensation for unused visas.
