How many people are using Twitter now
Twitter statistics 2021: Development of user numbers, user growth & sales
How is the development of Twitter in 2021? Again pretty good and the positive trend from last year continues. The current Twitter statistics for the first quarter of 2021 again show a clearly positive development in the development of Twitter user numbers. The record sales of over $ 1 billion from the fourth quarter of 2019 were exceeded again and stand at $ 1.036 billion, which is not a new high. This was reached at just under $ 1.3 billion at the end of 2020.
When it comes to the number of Twitter users, the focus is on the daily active and monetizable users. You know the so-called mDAUs from Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.
With 199 million daily active users, Twitter continues to grow and grew by 17% year-on-year.
Twitter is thus continuing its positive development, listening to its users and trying to establish new functions such as Twitter Spaces, Twitter Topics, Audio Tweets, Twitter Fleets (Twitter Stories), the targeted display of tweets and Twitter Spaces. Of course, Twitter is also becoming more and more complex and diverse.
Twitter statistics for 2021
All statistics come straight from Twitter
🐦 199 million active Twitter users per day (worldwide)
Among the daily active users: Inside Twitter can record a plus of 17% year-on-year. Twitter is thus continuing its strong growth of the last few quarters and only just fails at the magical limit of 200 million daily active users: Inside
This enabled Twitter to win another 7 million users in 2021: Inside. In the last twelve months there were a total of 63 million new users: Inside.
Another note about the 199 million users: Inside. Twitter speaks of "monetizable". So people to whom, for example, advertisements can be played. Then of course there are also users: Inside of Tweetdeck and Co., who just don't see any ads and are therefore not “monetizable”. The number of active Twitter users is therefore higher than the 199 million people. But how much exactly is difficult to answer.
(Thanks for the hint Bernd Vehlow)
🐦 162 million daily active users outside the US (worldwide)
Internationally, Twitter was able to win 29 million new users in twelve months. Thus, a large part of the quarterly growth is due to the international user base.
🐦 Daily use of Twitter increased by 27% in 2020
In the fourth quarter of 2019, year-over-year growth was 19%.
🐦 In the US, daily active users increased by 5 million year-on-year
38 million people in the US use Twitter every day.
🐦 4,100 Twitter topics available
In order to make the timelines of its users more diverse, people can follow certain topics. Twitter has increased the number of topics available to over 4,100.
🐦 Interactions with Twitter ads increased by 35%
The positive development in the number of Twitter users is finally being reflected in the interactions with Twitter ads.
At the same time, the cost per ad interaction has decreased by 3%.
🐦 $ 899 million in ad revenue for Twitter
Ad revenue is $ 899 million, up 24% and should please Twitter. Thus, Twitter has also overcome the effects of the Corona crisis for the time being. In Q1 2020 it was already $ 682 million. At the end of 2019, the $ 1 billion mark in total sales was broken for the first time. After a break-in, Twitter now seems to be on the right track again, but is not yet exhausting its possibilities. Firstly in terms of frequency, but also the possible monetization of new formats such as Twitter Fleets. But it's probably a little early for that now.
🐦 Total Twitter revenue increased 22%
Total revenue from Twitter is up 22% year over year to $ 1.036 billion.
🐦 $ 480 million in international ad revenue
Internationally, sales rose by 41% to.
🐦 Twitter has over 5,200 employees
The number of Twitter employees has increased by 1,200 in two years.
🐦 The amount of spam and suspicious content has decreased by 18%
This point is one of Twitter's top priorities.
"Health is our top priority, from a mindset and resourcing perspective, as we continue our work to help people find credible information and feel safe participating in the conversation on Twitter."
🐦 Less than 5% of the registered accounts should be spam accounts
Twitter is very active in this field and has been able to reduce the number of spam accounts by 20%. (Q4 2018)
🐦 9% of all English-language tweets use the 140 character limit completely
In September 2017, Twitter started a test with 280 characters.
🐦 Fun fact: Twitter has miscalculated its growth and absolute user numbers since 2014
The number of users from Q2 2017 was reduced by 2% users. The communication of the monthly active users will be discontinued.
🐦 96 million hours of live streaming via Periscope (from 2018)
Twitter also relies on live streaming and, extrapolated, Periscope should come to over 400 million hours of live streaming in 2017.
🐦 Hashtags have been on Twitter since summer 2007
On August 23, 2019, Twitter hashtags celebrated their tenth anniversary.
The 199 million daily active users are another positive development for Twitter and the highest number in the history of Twitter.
In the quarterly report it is emphasized several times that Twitter is still in a phase of upheaval.
Twitter Fleets have been rolled out and Twitter Spaces is intended to add another format to the user experience. Spaces was aggressively communicated on Twitter's Investor Relations account and we can assume that there will be a lot more to do here in the coming weeks and months.
With Fleets, the improved Twitter camera and Spaces, there are central components that should and will shape the future of Twitter.
