What is a christian

The definition of a “Christian” in a dictionary would read something like this: “a person who professes to believe in Jesus Christ or to a religion based on Jesus' teaching”.

While this is a good place to start, like many definitions in the dictionary, it doesn't really express the biblical truth of what it means to be a Christian. The word “Christian” is used three times in the New Testament (Acts 11:26; 26:28; 1 Peter 4:16). Followers of Jesus Christ were first called "Christians" in Antioch because their behavior, actions and speech were similar to those of Christ (Acts 11:26). The word "Christian" literally means "belonging to Christ" or a "follower of Christ".

Unfortunately, the term "Christian" has lost much of its meaning over time and is often used to refer to someone who is religious or has high moral values, but who may or may not be a true follower of Jesus Christ. Many people who neither believe nor trust Jesus Christ with their lives consider themselves Christians simply because they go to church or live in a "Christian" country. But going to church, helping disadvantaged people, or being a good person doesn't make a Christian. Going to church doesn't make a person a Christian any more than staying in a garage can make a car. Church or congregation membership, regular church service visits and donations for church or congregation work cannot turn you into a Christian.

The Bible teaches that good works do not make us righteous before God. In Titus 3: 5 it says: "He saved us - not for the sake of the works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy - through the bath of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit". A Christian is someone who is born again of God (John 3: 3, 7; 1 Peter 1:23) and who places his faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2: 8 tells us, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not from yourselves: it is God's gift,"

A true Christian is one who puts their faith and trust in Jesus Christ and His work, including His death on the cross in payment for sin and His resurrection on the third day. In John 1:12 it says: "As many received him, he gave them power to become children of God, those who believe in his name," The mark of a true Christian is love for others and obedience to God's word ( 1 John 2: 4, 10). A true Christian is a child of God, part of God's true family, and someone who has been given new life in Christ.
